Comments from panel of UO women (Winter, 2002)
- Faculty need to adapt to different learning styles.
- Small groups so all can be heard.
- Don't just focus on the loud students.
- Don't make students feel their comments are stupid.
- Bring out the quiet students.
- Start out by talking about the class as a safe place.
- Don't single out one person as an example.
- How can you "invite" students to participate as opposed to "challenge"
them to participate.
- Unless I get an invitation, I may not feel welcomed.
- This may be especially true if the instructor is male.
- When only one story is told, it gets old. You need to find some part of
yourself in the material.
- Women may be less likely to ask for help. Faculty need to make themselves
available.
- How can you show/demonstrate that it's not a hostile environment?
