Comments from UO LGBTQ student panel (Winter 2002)
- I had all these new issues to think about--
- Do I come out in class?
- Do I talk about my family?
- There is a lot of fear and concern initially.
- I felt no negatives in class, but also no positives.
- Pink triangles on office doors make me feel more comfortable.
- People in the LGBTQ community; know when information or material is omitted.
- Suggestions--
- Encourage faculty to use resources available to them.
- Be creative in how you can include LGBTQ issues in class material.
- Include the UO non-discrimination policy (Affirmation of Standards)
in your syllabus and talk about it the first day.
- Faculty don't seem homophobic but they do seem very stuck in a heterosexist
frame.
- Campus climate report--
- Some departments are very sexist--women are not involved.
- Recommended that faculty go through diversity training.
- It is not good to ignore statements.
- Faculty can support LGBTQ Students by:
- Being on the out list, stopping by events, postings on door.
- Asking yourself, How welcoming is my office?
- Including LGBTQ materials in your course.
