Reading Responses
Reading responses or reaction papers can be assigned along with a reading assignment to encourage students to read more carefully, think through the key points of the reading and come to class prepared to contribute to discussion. Length is generally one or two pages depending on the assigned material. These papers can be graded or ungraded. If you have more than 25-30 students, you might consider assigning a short response paper with every reading, giving credit for turning it in (plus or minus) and then randomly choosing a manageable number out of the total for the term to read carefully and grade.
