Self Assessment
Self assessment can be used in a variety of ways:
- It can used in group work to assist students in raising their awareness about the quality of their contributions to the group.
- It can part of any writing assignment. Ask students to include a self assessment with their paper summarizing the strengths and weaknesses they see in their writing.
- Self assessment has been used in math classes to explain how a student prepared for an exam--an outline of his/her process and whether or not outside resources were used (the instructor's office hours, a study group, a math help session or lab)
- Self assessment can also be used in online courses. For example, you can have students track their contributions to an online discussion (archiving them in a document) and then evaluate this in terms of your expectations for their participation.
