15 Fun Ways to Practice the Foreign Language You Are Studying

- Read children’s books in the language you are studying.
- Listen to music in the language you are studying.
- Find a native speaker of the language you are studying and do language exchange tutoring with them.
- Make picture flashcards with vocabulary words and carry them around with you.
- Watch a movie in the language you are studying.
- Go to restaurants where the language you are studying is spoken and try ordering in the language.
- Do recreational activities with international students who speak the language you are studying. Examples: biking, chess, working out at the gym, shopping, etc.
- Volunteer at an agency that serves a population that speaks the language you are studying. Examples: nursing homes, non-profit agencies such as Legal Aid, etc.
- Label all the items in your house with stick-it notes using the vocabulary of the language you are studying.
- Go to “coffee hours” where people get together and practice speaking the language you are studying.
- Watch television in the language you are studying.
- Find a job where your foreign language is spoken. Examples: babysitting for a German family, working in a kitchen at a Mexican restaurant, etc.
- Invite students from your class to come over and play charades in the language you are studying. Make it a potluck and have people bring dishes from the countries where the language is spoken.
- Take a class to study a traditional dance or craft of a country where the language you are studying is spoken. Examples: salsa dancing, origami, German cooking, etc.
- Study abroad in a country where your language is spoken.
Immerse yourself in the culture and the language!
