How do I gain my students' respect?
- Exhibit good teaching skills. If you have no training in education, seek
help from your colleagues or other resources on designing lesson plans, and
teaching your subject area. Work on your presentation skills and be very organized
in your presentation of material.
- Learn some classroom/behavior management skills. Keeping some order in
your classroom will be essential to earning the respect of your students.
If your classroom is not an environment conducive to learning, many students
will see your class as a waste of their time. There are some fantastic books
on this subject, and if you have the time, taking a class in behavior management
would be extremely beneficial.
- Thirdly, be professional and evenhanded with the class. This means treating your students equally and never making inappropriate kinds of comments to your students. It may also mean dressing neatly, cleanly, and a slightly formally. It does not mean that you cannot get to know your students, and have fun in your classroom.
