How do I get students to take me seriously?
- When you introduce yourself to the class tell them what your previous degrees
are and what you studied. Tell them about your professional academic interests.
This will not only give them information about you as a person, it will also
remind them that you are serious and knowledgeable about the field.
- Make your expectations clear on the first day of class. Be sure to include both "warm" and "cool" expectations. "Warm" means telling them it is important to you that the classroom be a place where students feel safe to share their ideas and take risks in a supportive environment. "Cool" means reminding them of the duties of being a student. For example, tell them that you are a stickler for grammar and expect them to put their best into their papers. Another "cool" topic may be taking a firm stance on absences and late assignments, and make it clear at the beginning.
