Setting up a Blackboard coursesite

This workshop will provide an introduction to setting up a Blackboard account at the University of Oregon.

Responding to Student Writing
Laurie Jones Neighbors, 10am-12 in 360 Condon
Figuring out what to focus on and how to manage your time in responding to student papers and reports can be overwhelming, especially if you are not a composition teacher! In this workshop, we'll take a look at best practices for commenting on content, marking papers to encourage improvement in grammar and punctuation, and conveying grades in a helpful manner.

Grading Essay Exams
Susan Lesyk, 11am-12 in 260 Condon
Grading essay exams is a difficult task.  This session will provide suggestions on all aspects of grading--from creating a rubric to dealing with students who are dissatisfied with their grades.

So You've Got to Write a Syllabus
Tim McMahon, 12-1pm in 260 Condon
One of the most challenging things about being a new instructor is writing your first syllabi.  In this session you'll receive tips, templates, and ideas about what to include in this important document.

Teaching In an American Classroom
Staff from the American English Institute, 12-2pm in 360 Condon
The university classroom in the United States may be very different from the classroom in which you were taught.  This workshop is designed to help International GTFs get started successfully with their teaching assignments.  (Important Note:  This workshop will add to the information received at the International Student Orientation workshop scheduled for September 22.  International GTFs are encouraged to attend both workshops.)

I Made It Through the First Week - Now What?

Overwhelmed?  Transitioning To a New Job in a New Place.

Moving to a new place and beginning graduate school can be very challenging.  This workshop will focus on the psychological processes of transitioning and offer suggestions on how to make this experience more enjoyable.

How to Handle Difficult Situations with Students
Chris Loschiavo, 2pm-3pm in 360 Condon
Learn more about the student conduct process and specific strategies for dealing with disruptiveness, plagiarism and cheating, inappropriate behavior, feeling threatened by students, legal issues related to student conduct and more.
