How Can We Use Research to Teach Them More Effectively?

Did you know that according to national data taken from institutions similar to UO, full-time, first year students spend about 13 hours per week studying, 8 hours working on and off campus, and 5 hours participating in co-curricular activities? Were you aware that last fall’s class of first year students at the UO had a mean high school GPA of 3.49 and SAT scores of 550 verbal and 556 math? Or that, while frustrating for faculty, it is probably developmentally appropriate for first year students to be “dualistic” in their thinking? Knowing more about this unique group can help instructors become less frustrated and more effective in working with them.
