“What are my student’s talking about?”

We want to be able to relate the material we teach to our students’ lives, to make our examples, activities and illustrations accessible and connected to their values and interests. But how can we do this when we have no idea what these values and interests are? This workshop is a crash course in current pop culture and the best use of pop culture in the classroom. Not only will we explore such new favorites as Myspace, Second Life, Adult Swim and Boingboing, we’ll discuss strategies for using these resources to support your lesson plans. Part one will focus on cyber-culture and video games. Part two will discuss all other media: graphic novels, movies, television, magazines, music etc. You’ll leave with a considerable list of resources and the tools to turn Pop from the spoonful of sugar to the sugary sweet medicine itself.
