Fall 2008 Teacher Trainings (September 15 -27, 2008)

Every year the Teaching Effectiveness Program offers teacher training to all instructors. While trainings focus on those who are teaching for the first time, we welcome any instructor who would benefit by attending. Sessions fill quickly and are capped at 25, so early sign up is recommended.

All trainings meet from 9am-4pm. Registration is required. Contact gcooper@uoregon.edu to register.

NEW! Strategies for Discussion Leaders - Wednesday, September 24th from 2:00- 4:00, 51 PLC
This two-hour workshop is designed to teach discussion leaders (or any instructor who uses discussion) strategies for creating lively and fruitful conversations that help students enjoy class time, build critical thinking skills and understand the fundamental questions of the course. We will identify the thinking and argumentation skills your students should be practicing, learn common questions and prompts that address these skills, review a grab-bag of discussion activities (ice-breakers, fishbowl, "think, pair, share", consensus, brainstorm, etc.), and design discussion based lesson plans. Even if you don't yet know what specific discussion you'll be leading, you'll leave this workshop with a small arsenal of activities that will get them talking!

Basic Teaching Skills for Leading a Discussion or Lab Section (choose one date)
Activities and materials focus on: getting students to prepare and participate, facilitating discussions, promoting critical thinking, using group work, grading, managing your class, and preparing for exams.

Basic Teaching Skills sessions will be held in the Collaboration Center of the Knight Library- September 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27 from 9am-4pm.

Teaching for the First Time as the Sole Instructor - (choose one date.)
Activities and materials will focus on presenting material effectively, writing learning objectives and lesson plans, motivating your students to prepare for and engage with the course, promoting critical thinking, facilitating discussions, grading, working with groups, managing a class.

Teaching for the First Time as the Sole Instructor sessions will be held in the Collaboration Center of the Knight Library on Sept. 19 or 26 from 9am-4pm.

Teaching Large Classes - Sept. 19 or Sept. 26, 105 Peterson from 9am-4pm.
These sessions will focus on communicating to large audiences, promoting deep learning, writing learning objectives and lesson plans, working with groups in large classes, conducting classroom assessment techniques, working with GTFs, grading, and presenting effectively to engage your students.

International Graduate Teaching Fellows (IGTF)

Part One: September 22, 2008, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., EMU Mills International Center

This workshop will provide an overview of the challenges IGTFs may face in the U.S. classroom. The discussion will introduce topics that will be covered in greater detail in the afternoon workshop.

Part Two: September 22, 2008, 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.,EMU Mills International Center

In this workshop new IGTFS will learn strategies and techniques for teaching in U.S. university classrooms. We will provide information on overcoming cultural and language challenges for more successful teaching, starting out your experience positively from the first day of class, and accessing a variety of resources to support you in your position. A panel of current and former IGTFS will also be present to share their experiences with you.

Want an easy way to manage and post student grades? Learn more about using the Blackboard Grade Center feature to set up your course grades. The Teaching Effectiveness Program and Scholarly Communications and Instructional Support will offer a hands-on lab for setting up your Grade Center and will discuss best practices for utilizing this feature.

Presenting through Instructional Technology: Practice and Theory

Want to learn more about using PowerPoint and other presentational applications more effectively in the classroom? Join The Teaching Effectiveness Program and Scholarly Communications and Instructional Support for a discussion about the ways in which newer technologies can enhance student learning. Hands-on practice with PowerPoint or Keynote will be provided.

Looking for new ways to engage student participation? Learn more about using the Blackboard Discussion Board feature to set up class discussions. The Teaching Effectiveness Program and Scholarly Communications and Instructional Support will offer a hands-on lab for setting up your Discussion Boards. We will also explore the pedagogical benefits and challenges of moving class participation into the online environment.

Web 2.0: Expanding the Boundaries of Instructional Technology

Blogging, wikis, podcasting? What does it all mean for education? Join The Teaching Effectiveness Program and Scholarly Communications and Instructional Support for a discussion about ways in which these newer technologies can enhance student learning. Additionally, various hands-on opportunities with some of these Web 2.0 technologies will be available for each participant.
