Fall 2011 Teacher Trainings (September 12 -23, 2011)
Every year the Teaching Effectiveness Program offers teacher training to all instructors. While trainings focus on those who are teaching for the first time, we welcome any instructor who would benefit by attending. Sessions fill quickly so early sign up is recommended.

Basic Teaching Skills (Leading a Discussion or Lab Section) - choose one date
September 13, 14, 15, 20 from 9am-4pm.
Locations:
Sept. 13, 14, 15 will be in HEDCO 144
Sept. 20 will be in Lillis 175
Activities and materials focus on: getting students to prepare and participate, facilitating discussions, promoting critical thinking, using group work, grading, managing your class, and preparing for exams.
Basic Teaching Skills (Online and Blended Course Design)
September 15 from 9am-4pm.

Activities and materials focus on: getting students to prepare and participate in an online course environment, promoting an online learning community, and outlining and drafting an online learning unit or assignment.
Teaching for the First Time as the Sole Instructor
Choose Sept. 12 from 9am-4pm. (note: day and room change)
Location: PLC 72
Activities and materials will focus on presenting material effectively, writing learning objectives and lesson plans, motivating your students to prepare for and engage with the course, promoting critical thinking, facilitating discussions, grading, working with groups, and managing a class.

Whether you are able to make time for the Teacher Trainings listed above or not, the Teaching Effectiveness Program offers one-on-one consultations to prepare you for teaching. We can help with syllabus preparation, lesson/lecture planning, grading decisions, workload issues, managing GTFs and any other questions and concerns. Teaching in the U.S. for International Graduate Teaching Fellows
September 16, 1:30-4:30pm, Mills International Center.
This workshop will provide an overview of the challenges IGTFs may face in the U.S. classroom and a chance to meet and network with fellow IGTFs. Topics covered will include strategies and techniques for teaching in U.S. university classrooms, overcoming cultural and language challenges, starting out your experience positively from the first day of class, and accessing a variety of resources to support you in your position. A panel of current and former IGTFS will also be present to share their experiences with you.

Want an easy way to manage and post student grades? In this session we will introduce using the Blackboard Grade Center feature to set up your course grades. Participants will learn about how to initially set up a course Grade Center, specifics about setting up specific grading schemas, and other important grade management features found with the Grade Center.
