Teaching to Diversity
The Teaching Effectiveness Program offers workshops throughout the academic year to help instructors create a classroom environment that is welcoming and conducive to the learning of all students. See our Schedule of Events for workshops and classes running this term. These workshops focus on various aspects of teaching related to diversity and on different communities within the student population.
Offerings include:
- What
does being white have to do with diversity?
This program explores such topics as white identity development, privilege, and guilt with a focus on how this information can be of use in the classroom. - Campus climate begins with classroom climate
This program offers suggestions for what instructors can do to create syllabi, facilitate class discussions, and deliver content in ways that support success for all students. - Creating the inclusive classroom
The inclusive classroom is an environment in which all students can be engaged, learn, and believe that they matter. In this workshop, the concept of the inclusive classroom will be explored--what it is; how it can be created; how it can be maintained. - Learning about ourselves
We teach who we are? but who are we and how does it impact our teaching? In this three-part series we will explore these three questions: Who are we? How does who we are impact how we teach? How can we use this information to become better teachers? - How Can We Use Research to Teach Them More Effectively
Part of the teaching first year students series. - Exploring Whiteness and Privilege
One topic that is sometimes left out of diversity discussions is the subject of "whiteness"--what does it mean to be "white"? In this program we'll explore the concepts of whiteness and privilege and focus on how this information can be put to use.) - UO Students - Who Are They? How Can We Best Teach Them?
Combining local and national information with just a bit of theory, this workshop will examine the world of undergraduate students. By exploring the questions ?Who are they?? and ?What do we know about their backgrounds, interests, and experiences?? we will uncover information to help us better address the fundamental issue of ?How can we best teach them?? - Educating the Net Generation
"Digitally literate, connected, immediate, experiential, social, teams, structure, engagement and experience, visual and kinesthetic, and things that matter." Educating the Net Generation, Diana and James Oblinger - Language and Labels
The plethora of choices we have available to us in talking about identity can be daunting, especially in classroom situations. Such language and labels can often seem overly complicated at best and arbitrary at worst. - The Problem With "I Don't See Color"
One of the reactions to diversity trainings is "I don't need to be here -- I
don't see color." In this workshop we will explore this idea, raise some
concerns about it, and show how embracing this belief is not helpful to the
students in your classrooms.
We are open to suggestions on
training topics from anyone with instructional responsibilities. We can also
provide workshops designed
to meet the specific needs of individual departments.
