The Faculty/GTF Relationship
Hopefully, the faculty member with whom you will be working this
year will a strong mentor for your introduction to teaching. Some
faculty have had a lot of experience working with GTFs in their
courses and newer faculty may be working with GTFs for the first
time. Below are a list of questions you might consider asking
regarding your role in the class and your specific assignment. It's
best to be clear on
these matters. You may have other questions to add to this list.
Ideally there will be time each week to check in with the professor for the course regarding both what the expectations are for covering important ideas and concepts in the course material, and also about the teaching and classroom management issues which may arise as well.
If, for any reason, you are not getting the help and support you need to feel comfortable in your teaching assignment and confident in your ability to be successful with your students, TEP consultation services are free and available to you throughout the term.
- What are the goals of the course and of the section I am teaching?
- Am I required to regularly attend the primary class?
- Is student attendance required for my section?
- How many office hours must I maintain per week?
- Will I have an opportunity (be required?) to give a guest lecture or presentation during the term?
- What are the expectations for how discussions/labs should be conducted?
- Will I be in charge of grading papers and exams? How will grading criteria be developed to ensure consistency across sections?
- What are the course policies on cheating on tests, plagiarism, grade appeals, disruptiveness in class, late assignments? On what matters do you wish to be informed?
- Will I be observed? If so, how often? Will I get written and verbal feedback on my teaching?
- If I am unable to be there for my section for some reason what procedure should I follow?
- If I need teaching supplies (overhead transparencies, colored chalk, paper, etc.), where do I get these?
- How much autonomy will I have to try new things or present new ideas and perspectives?
- What percentage of the total course grade is allocated for my section?
- What departmental teaching resources are available to me - journals, books, videos?
